How I built a project in 6th semester and it got me a better offer than placement

Everyone tells you to build projects for your resume. Nobody tells you what happens when a project you built for your resume actually gets used. This is that story.

In 6th semester I was taking a Web Tech elective and needed a project. My roommate kept complaining that he could never figure out if the canteen was open and what was on the menu — the college WhatsApp group updated it sporadically and often incorrectly. I built a simple website that scraped the mess notice board and converted it into a readable schedule. Added push notifications for meal timings. Hosted it on Render free tier.

I shared it in the CSE batch WhatsApp group. In 48 hours, 200 people had bookmarked it. Someone shared it in the ECE group. By the end of the week it had 600 unique visitors. The college's official Instagram account reposted it without crediting me.

Here's where it changed my trajectory: I added this to my resume as 'Campus Mess Scheduler — 600+ active users, automated PDF parsing, real-time push notifications.' In my Persistent Systems campus interview, the interviewer spent 12 of the 30 minutes just asking about this project.

I got the Persistent Systems offer at 10.5 LPA — higher than my initial TCS Digital offer. The interviewer told me later (he was a CGC alum) that the project showed I understood real users and real constraints, not just academic exercises.
